Pittsburgh Neighborhoods: History of Windgap

A Brief History of Windgap

history of WindgapWindgap is a neighborhood in the west area of Pittsburgh. Most of its homes were built post World War II. Windgap is the home of the historic Remember When Ice Cream Shop, which was originally built in 1960 as a barbershop. When the building was set to open as a barbershop months later, another barbershop opened just three doors down. So, the original owner turned the building into a soft serve ice cream shop. The family ran it for three years then decided to sell it to another neighborhood family who ran it for 28 years. In 1991, a woman named Mary Gettel of West Park bought the shop and renamed it Remember When. It now serves items like the memory cone, Pittsburgh’s largest ice cream cone.
