Fall can often be the best time of year to go hiking. With the gorgeous changing leaves, cooler weather and sunny days, we felt inspired to post about some of the best hikes around Pittsburgh.

1. Buttermilk Falls

This Indiana, PA oasis includes a 45-foot waterfall and scenic wooded area. The 48 acres that make up the falls area were donated to Indiana County Parks in 1995 by the Keystone-Conemaugh Group. The site has been set aside as a way to protect plant and animal communities. Take a day trip this fall and unplug a bit at Buttermilk Falls.

2. Frick Park

Frick Park is located in the actual city of Pittsburgh, making it an easy visit for those interested in hiking but not committing to an entire day. 3. Beechwood Farms Nature Reserve

Beechwood Farms Nature Reserve is the headquarters of the Audubon Society of Western PA–and did you know it’s nearby and completely accessible in Fox Chapel? The Audubon Society manages and operates the miles of trails and 134 sanctuary acres. After your hike, partake in educational classrooms, a nature store and even a nature play area for the little ones.

4. North Park

For those who are new to hiking and want to start small, the paved loop around the lake is always a good bet. There are also single track and multi-use trails—43 miles of them to be exact. North Park is quite popular, especially on weekends, so plan wisely if you wish to have some true quiet time. The park is open daily from dawn until midnight.

5. McConnell’s Mill State Park

This state park in Lawrence County is in the Slippery Rock Creek Gorge. The park was created when glacial lakes drained thousands of years ago. A natural landmark, McConnell’s Mill has steep sides and the valley floor has massive boulders. There’s also a gristmill on site for post-hike tours.
