We here at Pittsburgh Beautiful love giving back. What better day to consider making a donation than today, Giving Tuesday. Since 2013, the Tuesday after Thanksgiving has been designated a national day designated for giving back. Here are five charities we love that we wanted to highlight. If you have a favorite charity, let us know in the comments. Don’t forget to include a link on how to donate for those who are interested!

1. Homeless Children’s Education Fund

Giving Tuesday

We featured the Homeless Children’s Education Fund earlier this year. The mission of the fund is to¬†advance the education of children and youth who are experiencing homelessness and to guide them to be productive and empowered citizens through collaboration and advocacy. They work with 27 homeless agencies in Allegheny County to create learning centers within the shelters.

2. Little Sisters of the Poor

Giving Tuesday

The Little Sisters of the Poor were featured when we shined a light on the annual KDKA Spaghetti Breakfast. The breakfast takes place in September and is sponsored by DelGrosso Foods. The Little Sisters of the Poor collect money for their charity during the breakfast. The charity works to serve the elderly poor in over 30 countries around the world.

3. Animal Friends of Pittsburgh

Giving Tuesday

Animal Friends is a non-profit companion animal resource center that serves area pets. The non-profit includes human rescue, shelter and adoption services for homeless pets, humane education, pet therapy and more. Animal Friends also leads a comprehensive spay and neutering program.

4. Phipps Conservatory

Giving Tuesday

If you love all things involving flowers, nature and plants you’ll want to consider donating to Phipps Conservancy. Phipps is a 501(c)(3) tax exempt organization and is a historic landmark. Phipps includes a 14-room glasshouse and 23 unique gardens.

5. The Mario Lemieux Foundation

Giving Tuesday

The Mario Lemieux Foundation, named after the Penguins player and now part owner of the team, is a local charity. The organization is dedicated to raising funds for cancer research, patient care and Austin’s Playrooms. Austin’s Playrooms create safe places for children to play while receiving treatment in a hospital.
